OpenAI doubles Codex and Work usage limits for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium, and drops the Pro 200 cut
OpenAI is doubling usage limits for every ChatGPT Pro tier ($100, $200 and $500) and for Business Premium, effective October 29. Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux (Tibo) announced it at 16:56 UTC as Day 25 of his daily series of updates, and in the same post called off the cut that grandfathered Pro 200 subscribers were due to get after today.
Day 25/
We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today.
We heard your kind feedback and won’t be reducing usage limits for Pro 200, so your Work and Codex usage will stay the same. We’re also going to continue offering…
The full post makes three commitments. Limits double for "all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today." On Pro 200: "We heard your kind feedback and won't be reducing usage limits for Pro 200, so your Work and Codex usage will stay the same." And extended limits for dots, ChatGPT's persistent agents, continue "for now", with dot usage still counted separately from default usage.
The timing is hard to miss. October 29 was the last day of the old allowance for people who subscribed to Pro 200 before the plan was reshuffled in September, as we reported this morning. The emails those subscribers received, as quoted by users and by The Next Web, described a drop from 20x the Plus allowance to 10x. Less than a day earlier Sottiaux had put the odds of a reversal at "low, but not zero." It turned out to be not zero.
What the numbers probably are
OpenAI hasn't published new multipliers, and the post doesn't use any. One has been confirmed in a reply: asked whether the $500 plan now gets "50x usage", Sottiaux answered "Yes". As a doubling, that would put Pro 500's previous allowance at 25x Plus.
Pro 200 is less clear-cut, because the two sentences can be read together in more than one way. The reading that fits both, and the one users summarizing the post have taken, is that the new, reduced Pro 200 allowance is doubled back up, so a $200 subscriber ends up where they were before: about 20x Plus for Codex and Work, the old grandfathered level. That is what "will stay the same" says. Nothing in the post supports a Pro 200 allowance above its old level, and we wouldn't plan around one until OpenAI's documentation says so. We couldn't check the Pro tiers help page for an update: it refuses automated readers.
The post also doesn't say whether the doubling is permanent or a promotion, or whether the one-time usage-credit grant described in the Pro 200 emails still applies now that the cut is off.
Not a reset
This is a different kind of change from the usage resets that filled many of Sottiaux's recent Day posts, which refill the current window once and leave the allowance as it was. A doubling raises the ceiling itself. Sottiaux acknowledged the shift in a follow-up: "Graduating from The Reset Company to The Token Company."
Plus, Business (non-Premium) and other plans aren't mentioned, so for them nothing has changed. Plus subscribers were quick to ask why they were left out.
- Tibo (@thsottiaux): Day 25/ We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today.
- Tibo (@thsottiaux): Yes (reply on whether Pro 500 gets 50x usage)
- StefanoGPT: Wait, so does it mean that the OpenAI $500 plan is getting 50x usage?
- Tibo (@thsottiaux): Graduating from The Reset Company to The Token Company.
