ChatGPT Pro $200 grandfathered limits end after October 29; Codex lead puts the odds of a reversal at "low, but not zero"

If you subscribed to ChatGPT Pro at $200 before the plan was reshuffled in late September, October 29 is the last day of your old usage allowance. OpenAI's Pro tiers help page says subscribers who were active on Pro 200 at any point from September 22, 2026 to 10am PT on September 29 keep their previous allowance through October 29, 2026. After that they move to the lower allowance at the same $200 price. The page says only affected users get an email about it. It doesn't say what time on October 29 the switch happens.

How much lower? OpenAI's public documentation doesn't give the multiplier. The figures in circulation come from the emails. Users quoting theirs on Hacker News describe the $200 plan dropping to 10x the Plus allowance, down from 20x, with 5-hour quota windows removed. They also mention a one-time grant of 62,500 usage credits, "a $2,500 USD value", which expires December 31, 2026. The 10x figure matches The Next Web's report, which we cited in our October 28 piece on the latest Codex reset. We haven't seen an OpenAI statement that puts a number on it publicly.

Will OpenAI back down? On October 28 a user asked the Codex lead, Thibault Sottiaux, "What are the chances that OpenAI cancels the usage limit halving for $200 plan?" Sottiaux replied early on October 29, at 03:37 UTC:

Low, but not zero

October 29, 2026

That isn't a commitment either way. As of this writing it's the only on-record answer, and it doesn't push back on calling the change a halving.

A separate worry also went around on October 28. A widely shared post claimed ChatGPT was "unifying Chat and Work" and asked how that would change usage limits. Sottiaux replied that the team is working on it but it is "not rolling out just yet". Sottiaux said the plan is to bring Chat and Work capabilities together "at some point this year", carefully, with "more to share soon." So for now nothing has changed in how chats and Codex/Work count against limits.

No usage reset was announced today. Sottiaux's daily "Day 24" post was about a feature, not limits.
